Congratulations! You’re getting married! If you’re anything like me, you’re extremely excited, but also a little confused. How exactly do I get married? I know the formal proceeding and the ceremony, but what makes it legal? With my own wedding coming very quickly, I’ve been looking into what I need to do to change my name and get a marriage license. The requirements seem to be the same for all counties in Nebraska. Check out next month’s blog on changing your name!
– The applicants must be 17 years of age to be married in the State of Nebraska.
– Both applicants must appear together at the County Clerk’s Office between 8:00am and 4:30pm.
– The fee for a marriage license is $25.00. This payment must be in cash only.
– Applicants must provide a photo identification. This might be a valid driver’s license from any U.S. State, Nebraska ID card, U.S. Passport, U.S. Military Card, or a foreign passport. Proof of citizenship nor immigration is required.
– You must know full name and birthplace of the bride and groom. A birth certificate is not required.
– You must know the full name and birthplace of the parents of the bride and the groom.
– If the applicants have a social security number, that information must be produced. However, you do not need a social security number to get married.
– The application also requires the applicant list their previous marriages and how they ended.
– Good news, marriage licenses are good for one year from the date of issuance and can be used in any county in Nebraska.
The application is super easy to fill out. Just make sure to ask your parents their full names and birth places. Further questions regarding requirements, or making an appointment due to COVID-19 can be found on individual county websites.
