Written by Tana Fye and Summer Law Clerk Eric Hagen
At Fye Law Office, we’ve been fortunate to have two wonderful law students working with us this summer as law clerks. This means that they do research projects, draft documents, and help us with complex and time consuming cases. Because of COVID, both of our law clerks have been working remotely. In this blog post, we’d like to introduce Eric Hagen!
Tell us a little bit about yourself. (Where you’re from, your family life, interests, hobbies, etc.)
I was born and raised in Omaha and that is where I returned when I decided to go to law school. I have three sons, Eli, Henry, and Titus. We all enjoy going camping, swimming, and visiting the zoo when we can. I am a big fan of rugby, which I played for many years. I am on the board of the Nebraska Youth Rugby Association and I coach a high school team in Omaha. I also enjoy volunteering for a couple of excellent local organizations including the Veterans Legal Support Network and Fathers For A Lifetime.
Where do you attend law school, and what year are you in school?
I am entering my third year at Creighton School of Law, expecting to earn my Juris Doctor and Masters in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution in May 2021.
What is your education and work experience prior to starting your clerkship with Fye Law Office?
I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I obtained a Bachelor or Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science. After a year with the Lancaster County Department of Corrections, I attended Officer Candidate School in the U.S. Marine Corps, where I commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2012. I served on active duty for six years before returning to Omaha to attend Creighton. In addition to working at Fye Law Office, I also work, primarily remotely, for Boys Town.
What are your plans after graduation from law school?
My goal is to enter private practice in the not-too-distant future.
What is your favorite type of case, or matter, or project to work on? Why?
I am interested in working in many areas of law, but have found myself gravitating toward a focus on criminal defense and family law.
With COVID, you’ve been clerking remotely for Fye Law Office. Have you noticed any benefits or challenges to doing a clerkship this way, as opposed to clerking in the office in person?
I have enjoyed the flexibility that comes with a remote clerkship, particularly being able to complete the work at times of day that are easiest with my schedule. The primary challenge is of course finding that time while raising three young boys and going to school. However, I also miss having a working environment and being able to regularly interact with coworkers face-to-face.
Many thanks to Eric for telling us a little bit about himself, and for working with us this summer at Fye Law Office!
