Congratulations! You’ve gotten married! Now you need to change your name. The first step is changing your name with the Social Security Office.
There is a very simple form that you need to fill out. It asks various questions that are pretty simple. You can fill out the form before you go in to the office, which will save time while you are there. You will need to bring your social security card, a certified copy of your marriage certificate, and your driver’s license. You might also want to bring your passport or birth certificate. Once you bring all those things, the office will be able to do everything else.
Currently, at least in Nebraska, the offices are currently not available for appointments or walk-ins due to COVID. Presently, you have to mail in the application and a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Check with your local office for what they will need from you or if they are taking appointments.
Changing your name on your social security card requires a few more steps than name changes for anything else. You will also want to change your driver’s license. This step is rather simple. You will still need a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Then go over to your local DMV. You will fill out the form there and change your name to how you want it to be on your license. Then they will ask to see your certified copy of the marriage certificate. Then they will get it all changed for you.
Make sure you keep that certified marriage certificate close for a while. You will need it for a few other places too. The bank might need it as well if you haven’t changed your social security number yet.
