Last month I wrote about how to change your name after you get married. This month I’m going to cover how to get your name changed after a divorce. The steps are basically the same.

For Social Security, there is a very simple form that you need to fill out. It asks various questions that are pretty simple. You can fill out the form before you go in to the office, which will save time while you are there. You will need to bring your social security card, a certified copy of your divorce decree, and your driver’s license. You might also want to bring your passport or birth certificate. Once you bring all those things, the office will be able to everything else. You will want to make sure the final Decree states that you are allowed to change your name and what you can change your name to. If for some reason, the name is now what you want, ask your attorney to get it changed.

Currently, at least in Nebraska, the offices are currently not available for appointments or walk-ins due to COVID. Presently, you have to mail in the application and a certified copy of your divorce decree. Check with your local office for what they will need from you or if they are taking appointments.

Changing your name on your social security card requires a few more steps than anything else. You will also want to change your driver’s license. This step is rather simple. You will still need a certified copy of your divorce decree. Then go over to your local DMV. You will fill out the form there and change your name to how you want it to be on your license. Then they will ask to see your certified copy of the divorce decree. Then they will get it all changed for you.

Make sure you keep that certified divorce decree close for a while. You will need it for a few places. The bank might need it as well if you haven’t changed your social security number yet.
